Best 9 group activities in Queenstown: with discounts

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

Queenstown is a haven for corporate events and stag/hens do's so in this post we'll look at how you can entertain a large group of people. We'll tell you nine of the best activities to keep you having fun and bonding!

1. Group bungy with AJ Hackett: fear and excitement are friends!

Group bungy jumps can be an exciting group activity even if not all of your crew is able to jump (it's possible to spectate as well). The anticipation of the jump gels a group and can provide a really supportive environment whether for team building or for sports groups and stag/hens parties.

AJ Hackett has the ability to,

  • handle bookings for 10 or more people BUT if your group is slightly less that could also work,

  • can also provide meals and food on site if the group needs to eat,

  • choice of over 3 possible locations where you can jump (including NZ's highest bungy at 180+ meters) swing or zipline your way to happiness (and a little fear)!

Contact us to enquire about a booking. Usually, for groups around 10 or more, a group discount can be organized.

2. Nugget Point Spa: perfect apres-ski relaxation

If you're looking for a more relaxing way to entertain your group then Nugget Point Spa has you covered. They have,

  • a range of body, holistic, facials, manicure/pedicure services

  • as well as a steam room, a sauna, hot tub, a plunge bath, choice of three rain showers, and a saltwater pool.

They can cater for a one off treatment of the above services and facilities as well as packages that can last up to 4 hours.

We think this is the perfect way to relax after a day on the mountain or if your ski field of choice is not open due to bad weather then this is the perfect alternative.

Contact us to enquire about a booking. Usually, for groups around 10 or more, a group discount can be organized.

Note: They also have outdoor spas (with a view) which are an amazing Instagram location and are more affordable than the other options over at Onsen Hotpools.

3. The Playground: friendly and fun competition!

A big kids playground is at your fingertips. In between scenic Arrowtown and Queenstown, The Playground has a special set up called The Amazing Race which is ideal for groups and team building. The Amazing Race at The PlayGround offers,

  • target shooting with either paintball buns or bows and arrows,

  • a ropes course,

  • slingshots,

  • sheepherding and

  • a minefield challenge

Afterward, the group can relax and make a BYO barbecue amongst the amazing scenery of Coronet Peak or organize a caterer to come and errr... cater to you :) Read on for catering company details.

4. Clay Target Shooting: situated very close to Queenstown

Perfectly located on Queenstown Hill, 15 minutes from the center of town, is a clay shooting range boasting a fantastic view of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables.

They can cater to all levels of experience (one to four targets per round is possible) and any size group.

We recommend Clay Target Shooting for those who want to combine this with another activity as it is centrally located to town making it easy to shoot for a few hours and then get a quick transport to town for dinner and drinks. Or if you are shooting earlier in the day then you are able to have enough time to shoot (see what I did there!) off to another activity.

5. Under Dog - winter and summer Alaskan style dog sledding!!

One of the coolest things you could do in the area is Alaskan Style Dog Sleddin'! You can 'run' your own crew of dogs or be driven by an experienced handler. Multiple people can be held in a sled and on top of that you can run multiple sleds making this a feasible and fun group activity.

Under Dog is based in Cardrona about an 45 minute drive from Queenstown on the way to Wananka and opposite the Cardrona Ski Resort. They offer summer, winter and both night and day and multi-day tours that can be spread over as little as an hour or go a little longer to 4-5 hours or as we mentioned even overnight stays.

6. Escape Quest: flex your mental muscle!

It's not all adventure sports in Queenstown. Right in the center of town is Escape Quest which is an indoor problem solving and strategy experience where you can,

  • problem solve,

  • improve communication,

  • practice team work,

  • learn robust logic,

  • learn creative and lateral thinking,

  • gain awareness of, and respect for, diversity and others’ strengths

  • develop self awareness, and

  • feel the goodness from achievement under pressure

We love this spot as it's completely indoor so, there is no need for a plan B when the bad weather comes in. It's also in the middle of town so you can easily enjoy the nightlife or dining aspect of Queenstown afterward.

7. Frank's Pantry: group catering or high tea

One of the specialties at Frank's Pantry is a High Tea perfect for Hens Dos before the serious fun begins. They require 24 hours notice so get in early.

Also, if your group requires catering then we recommend Frank's Pantry. They can cater to individual needs and welcome a challenge so feel free to ask for whatever you require. They are also able to host you in their café (located in Frankton) or indeed can provide food to a group at one of the above activities.

8. Sherwood Group Dining: take your group to dinner after the day's activities

If you want a stylish and large area to host your group then this is the place. They can cater to large groups of 10 or more quite easily and have a great alternative menu. They are also centrally located in between Queenstown and Frankton.

They also have accommodation on site if you want to stay here and a fantastic outside area including poolside cocktails, a table tennis table, BMX jump track and a large garden where they grow their own food for their restaurant dining.

9. Vintage Steamship & Walter Peak High Country Farm

This trip is a very popular and easy group activity as it has something for everyone. Firstly,

  • You get to sail on lake Wakatipu for about an hour each way on your way to Walter Peak Station. On the way, you'll enjoy the breathtaking (cliché but accurate) views of the lake and Cecil Peak (the mountain opposite Queenstown center) on an authentic and working antique coal steamship named the TSS Earnslaw.

  • Once inside the boat you can enjoy a drink and also see the inner workings of the steam (coal) powered engine - the only one in New Zealand currently working.

  • Once at Walter Peak you can experience a taste of what life is like on a high country sheep farm as they have a live show (shearing and farm dog show) to entertain you.

  • Once at Walter Peak Station you can enjoy a farm-style buffet meal and enjoy locally made Otago Red Wine.
