How to get from Queenstown Airport to... anywhere!

Updated: Aug 9, 2019

Queenstown Airport is located in Frankton which has options to get to your place whether it's in the center of Queenstown, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Glenorchy or any other place you are staying. There is nothing like getting to your hotel after arriving in preparation for Otago fun and festivities. Let's get into it!

Queenstown Airport to Queenstown City center:

The Bus:

The Orbus is Queenstown's bus network and undoubtedly the cheapest option for getting from the airport to town. The bus from the airport stops at Frankton Bus shelter which acts as a hub for other lines on the network too, so you can connect if heading to Arrowtown, Kelvin Heights or Jack's Point. The journey from the airport to town takes approximately 20mins at a cost of $5 per adult ($4 child).

Note: If you are staying for a while you can purchase a bus card from the driver. The above prices assume you have a card otherwise they will be $10 and $8 respectively.

Private Transfer:

Affordable private transport options are also available for a hassle-free door to door service anywhere in the region. Costing similar to a taxi but offering a higher level of personal service. Private transport services can take you anywhere in the region (inc. Queenstown, Arrowtown, Wanaka and Glenorchy) at an affordable price.

Taxi:

More conventional taxis are available at the entrance to the airport where you'll be able to hop straight in to a vehicle as long as there are cars available. Like any other taxi service, these will take you where you need to go with a door to door service.

Shuttles:

An ideal option for large groups/families. A number of shuttle operators offer services from Airport to town or door to door personalized service.

Queenstown Airport to Wanaka or Cardrona:

Bus:

It's possible to get a bus from Queenstown to Wanaka (via Cardrona). In fact, you can get a bus from Dunedin and Christchurch to Wanaka (or Cardrona) as well.

There are three companies worth checking out:

Or if you're having any issues or need extra help contact the Wanaka Tourist Info Service.

Rent a Car:

If you are going to be in and around Wanaka consider renting a car. Activities in and around Wanaka are not exactly close together so if you are only there for a few days then consider renting a car. You can pick up at the airport in Queenstown and drive the beautiful 1-2 hours (longer in the winter given road conditions - you can check them here) over the hill to Wanaka.

Glenorchy is also the start of The Routeburn and many other popular hikes and we can do private transfers for this reason also. It's easy to stop off for supplies before arriving in Glenorchy also as you need to go through Queenstown Center in order to get to Glenorchy from the Airport as well.

Rental Car:

A rental car is another option and pick up is available from Queenstown Airport. If you are renting in order to start a hike and will need to leave the car at the trailhead then it's probably best not to rent and get a transfer instead.

Queenstown Airport to Clyde, Alexandra or Cromwell:

Bus:

You can check an intercity bus schedule here which will get you from Queenstown to Clyde, Alexandra or Cromwell. InterCity bus company is a quality service with comfort, nice drivers and lot's of space for your luggage, including for bikes and large bags. This bus will continue on to Dunedin.

Similar to Wanaka, if you are spending time in and around Clyde you may well want a car to get around. In which case just rent one and drive it out there. It's also a really nice drive.
